You won't learn some of the very basic kanji until much later, because the words don't turn up until lesson 15 (the case for 口, mouth, and 目, eye, to name a few). However, it's not always very useful that the kanji lessons are so intrinsically tied to the main lessons in the other books. It uses a lot of pictures in general so you can tie kanji to certain situations or images. This first volume is very useful as it explains where certain kanji came from: with little pictures to show how you can actually see a bird in the kanji for bird, 鳥, for example, it is really helpful when you're prone to visualization when learning. For the kanji books, I have some separate comments. The same applies as for all my minna no nihongo books: it's great to work with in class, very understandable and well explained.
